Furore

Furore

The ancient name of Furore was “Terra Furoris”, because during the stormy nights, the noise of sea was actually loud. Furore is a small town situated in the homonym fjord. It lies down along the beach and the Lattari Mountains (the town can’t be seen from the main road of Amalfi Coast).

Following the hairpin curves of the road cut along the coast between Amalfi and Positano, it’s easy to miss Furore, but you should be on the look-out for it and stop. Called “the town that isn’t”, this charming place is composed of two parts- one on the sea, the other on the mountain.

It is a “non town” because it has no center or main piazza. Instead, it is a scattered collection of houses sprinkled across the rocky cliffs. The hamlet of Fiordo is situated at the foot of the cliff down by the sea, along the SS 163 (national road) between Amalfi and Positano. A mountain pass built during the Republic of Amalfi is the only connection between sea and mountain. Here you will walk through tiny alleys and narrow plots of land miraculously terraced away onto the mountain and cultivated with lots of love.

This small coastal territory, lacking in cultivable lands and scarcely populated, was a land of tenacity, built up by exiles from Amalfi in search of safety. There was an impenetrable fortress that resisted Saracen raids. The first inhabitants became able fishermen, artisans and farmers. Some say they were forced from Amalfi as refugees, others say they left and sought refuge here. Either way, it’s a fascinating place that is a “neverland” outside of time and place.

History

Furore was founded by Romans and thanks to its geologic conformation it has always been inaccessible. Furore was a hamlet of Amalfi: maybe its name comes from the fjord of the Marina (the part on the sea), where many paper factories and grinding mills factories were. A very important resource for these activities was the water of Schiatro stream that came from Lattari Mountains.

Furore has always been inaccessible: Saracens could not invade it. It was first mentioned during the compilation of the “catasto carolino” in 1752: in this document Furore is described as a very small town, that didn’t have any cultivated lands and with a few inhabitants. The most important resources were handicraft and sheep-rearing.

Things to see and do in Furore

There are many sites of historical and architectural interest. Furore, with its wild beauty, invites you to embark on a fantastic journey to discover this enchanted village, between art and nature.
Walking through the streets of Furore, you can admire the fishing village with its cluster of houses clinging to the side of a fjord wall, the old paper mill, the mill, the small church in the rock, the elusive stairways, the lost path in the woods and the monazeno by Anna Magnani.
You will be fascinated by the fantastic murals by the author, which make Furore an authentic open-air museum, where the harshness of the area is mitigated by the imagination of the artists who, with their works, have given a cultural identity to the town. Author walls by Luigi and Rosario Gazzella, Leone, Padula, Di Meglio, Vettori and foreign artists such as Gilow, Werner, Wontroba, Argan and Lopez; thanks to which Furore joined the Italian Association of Painted Countries.

The Fjord of Furore

The Fjord is the dominant element that characterized the coastal landscape. It is a deep scar into the rock, almost a dolomitic landscape, in stark contrast with the sea and the long sandy beach.

In the past, a fishermen’s village nestled above this cove, and during the XVII century, an unexpected industrial development brought about change. The icy waters of the torrent Schiato, hurtling down from the Monti Lattari behind the cove, powered the machinery of a paper mill and a public flour mill.

Down the valley there is a “spandituro” or “drying room”, used for drying the paper produced. Today it houses an Ecomuseum, with an herbarium and a historical and geographical trail about legumes and cereals.

The two lateral ridges of the Vallone, which are about two hundred metres high, are criss-crossed by a network of pathways. Among them, the “Mad-Bat Path” is a botanical trail that is particularly useful to get to know the local Mediterranean scrub.
The fishermen’s village also houses the cinematic archive, “Museo Costa Diva – Le vie del cinema”, an itinerary through film sets which have had the exceptional location of the ‘Amalfi coast’ (including the film Amore, directed by Roberto Rossellini, with Anna Magnani, while the two were having a passionate affair here).

Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo

This church was also identified in the documentation of the time as the Church of S. Agnelo (= Angel); it has three naves, divided by pointed arches resting on columns without bases and with cone-shaped capitals. The central nave is covered by a flat ceiling, while the lateral ones have pointed cross vaults. On the side walls there are trefoil windows with a clear eighteenth-century imprint; the back wall of the building is three-apsed.

The bell tower, which precedes the church, is decorated with single lancet windows on each register and ends with a small dome.

Murals and Trekking

Discover, step by step, the murals just made by Italian and foreign artists; trekking and walking along extraordinary panoramic routes; taste foods and wines with unique flavors: these are the ingredients of a long weekend or a holiday (restorative for the body and the spirit) between the mountains and the sea, to discover the most secluded, authentic, sometimes still wild corners of the hinterland of the Amalfi Coast, which has its undisputed pearl in Furore.

The murals – Those in Furore are “walls in search of an author”, which since 1983 have been decorated by well-known Italian and foreign artists. Today over 120 works, including paintings and sculptures, make it one of the main and most original Painted Countries of the peninsula. Eight new murals just created. Just before entering the town, the colorful and impressive works of two young artists from Avignon, 30 meters long: “Fragments of life” by Hugo Sanze and “Furore rima d’amore” by Arno Geisseler, well-known writers known with Repy’s name.

Not far from the famous fjord (one of the most iconic and well-known places on the coast), the intense work dedicated to it by the well-known Ligurian painter Antonella Cota “Il Fiordo di Furore” and on the facade of a house “La Madonna delle cicale”, which it develops 4 m high, by the Neapolitan artist Carla Viparelli. Finally, two works of extraordinary vitality by the Salerno artist Zhena, real explosions of color that capture and interpret the genius loci of Furore with his unmistakable style, “Vibrations”, next to the Town Hall, and “Ways of love” in Contrada della Cicale, at the entrance to the emotional path of the same name dedicated to love, which will be available at the beginning of the summer and will lead to the discovery – with painted stations enriched with quotes – of the most romantic, panoramic places, rich in suggestions and mythological echoes and literaries of the 3 districts of the country, San Giacomo, San Michele, Sant’Elia.
