Conca dei Marini

Conca dei Marini

Conca dei Marini is famous for its tunnary, a vast series of nets lowered into the water and used to catch the tuna fish which transit through these waters

Conca dei Marini is one of pearl on the Amalfi Coast amongst scented lemon orchards and flamboyant flowers. Less renowned than the nearby neighors of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano, the village has impeccably preserved the old charm of a fishing village, with white houses tucked into the rock, like precious stones in a sculpted setting.

Dark green vegetation is speckled here and there by the bright yellow of the splendid lemons of the Coast: these are the dominant colours of the area, contrasted by the brilliant blue of the water.

The village stretches itself out along a small bay, overlooked by the so-called Torre Saracena (Saracen Tower) a watch tower built in 1563 with defensive purposes – to prevent probable Saracen pirates’ invasions that were becoming all-too-common at the time.

The main draw of Conca dei Marini is the Grotta dello Smeraldo, a marvelous karst cavity, one of the most famous in the world! Officially discovered by a local fisherman, Luigi Buonocore, in 1932, it was actually renowned in the previous century, too. The name comes from the several shades of emerald green that cast over the water inside the sea cavern, a phenomenon caused by a submarine fissure that filters the sunlight. In 1956, the local fishermen created a spectacular underwater nativity scene with pottery statues. Every Christmas, a group of scuba divers put down the Infant Jesus with bunches of coloured fresh flowers. You will be able to see all this from the crystalline waters. Grotta dello Smeraldo is accessible by both sea and land (from SS 163), where you’ll find an elevator.

Just above Conca dei Marini you will find the Convent of St Rosa built in the XIV century. The Convent is famous as the birthplace of the internationally-renowned Neapolitan dessert called sfogliatella, which was first made by the nuns in the 17th century. This delicious dessert is celebrated every year on August 30, with the local Festa della St Rosa.

But the main draws of Conca dei Marini are the less-crowded beaches and its laid-back fishing village atmosphere, a contrast to the better-known towns on the coast.

History

In the past Conca dei Marini was satellite centre of the biggest and richest Amalfi. It served the capital of the Dukedom from the economical point of view, having at its disposal a good group of boats for fishing or for trades also at long-range, and since it represented the arrival point of cut wood which arrived from Agerola woods.

It shared its fate with Amalfi period of enfeoffment and then of the annexation to Italy Reign. After a period of sharing administration with the near Furore, it became an independent municipality.

The village coast of arms contains an important reference to the role that it had during the angevin period, in fact there are three lilies of France, heraldic symbol of D’Angiò family.

Things to see and do in Conca dei Marini

When you are in Conca dei Marini you can admire the green of terraced gardens competes with (and loses to) the blue sea, while the town's distinctive houses flanking the ridges have thick, white walls, with cupolas, balconies, and external staircases, testimony to former Arabic, Moorish, and Greek settlements. Below, on Capo di Conca, a promontory once used as a cemetery, a 16th-century coastal tower dramatically overlooks the sea. On a curve in the road sits the village's most noteworthy attraction, the Emerald Grotto. While it all might seem overly tourist-focused at first glance, pause long enough in Conca dei Marini and you'll quickly discover the intense beauty that is its most lasting attraction.

Capo di Conca

Surrounded by the thick vegetation of Capo di Conca, a rock overlooking the sea, stands the Saracen Tower, initially used to spot the invasions of Arab pirates. The path leading to the tower is one of the best known and most admired on the coast. We recommend this walk, because it allows you to discover natural coves and rocks that deserve to be seen.

Conca dei Marini Beach

With its wonderful patches of emerald set in a blue-glass lagoon, Conca dei Marini’s harbor is one of the most enchanting visions on the coast.

Descend (and later ascend!) the steps past the Borgo Marinaro houses (a colony for off-duty celebrities) and down to the harbor, set with cafés and a little chapel dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve that seems to bless the picture-perfect beach.

Amenities: food and drink; lifeguards; showers; toilets.
Best for: snorkeling, swimming.

The church of San Pancrazio

The church of San Pancrazio martyr, 1300, placed on a tree-lined square: from this point, a solemn procession in honor of the Madonna generally starts on every year in mid-July. The sea view from the church is really stunning!!!

Visiting the Emerald Grotto

The Emerald Grotto was discovered in 1932 by a local fisherman and its name derives from the particular color of the water.
The cave is rich in columns, stalactites and stalagmites.
From June 15 to December 31 the visit within the marine speleological complex is carried out with with guided boats.
